Malaysia has expanded its list of standards to demonstrate the compliance with national toy safety requirements. The newly recognized standards will take effect on January 1, 2018.

Consumer Protection (Toy Safety Standards) Ordinance 2009 [P.U. (A) 275/2009 refers to the "major regulations" in these Ordinances, which stipulate that toy safety matters in Malaysia are governed by the 1999 Consumer Protection Act. According to the Main Regulations, the first schedule contains a list of Malaysian toy safety standards (MS and MS ISO). The Main Regulations are amended in accordance with the Consumer Protection (Toys Safety Standards) (Amendment) Regulation 2010 (PU (A) 252/2010), which defines MS 62115: 2008 as an alternative to the MS 725: 2004 for electric toy safety standards.

Note: Toys exported to Malaysia are also subject to consumer protection (Compliance and Qualified Marks for Safety Standards) Regulation 2010 (P.U. (A) 253/2010) and its amendments P.U. (A) 252/2016.

The last change date was October 2016. Malaysia issued the Consumer Protection (Toys Safety Standards) (Amendment) Regulation 2016 (PU (A) 257/2016) in the Federal Government Gazette to expand the first Schedule A list of standards used to demonstrate compliance. This amendment contains a number of important changes, including the recognition of the following criteria:

− ASTM F963；

− EN 62115 and EN 71 Parts 1 to 5;

− IEC 62115；

− ISO 8124 Parts 1 to 4.

Note: The MS 1774 part of the symbol for the age warning label is now covered by other standards, such as EN 71-1 and ISO 8124.1, which will expire after December 31, 2017.

The amendment also makes a textual amendment to Schedule 2 of the Main Ordinances to make the term clearer.

The new amendment will take effect on January 1, 2018.

The main contents of the list of toy safety testing standards in the first Schedule of the Main Regulations are summarized in Table 1.
